A new WIP: Wonky Stars

I've said before that I'm not really a "wonky" person, but this is now my second attempt at wonkiness (first one was a wonky 9-patch), and I kinda like how it's coming together :)

Orange Peels in Progress

The latest WIP on the design board is an orange peel quilt!
 I have been wanting to make one of these for quite some time, but was slightly put off by the thought of applique...  but since I'm planning to keep this one, I decided to invest the extra time & effort :)
 I'm loving the pastel colors, this is going to be a wall hanging in the baby's nursery.  The circles below are not part of the quilt, but rather another little nursery project I'll share soon!
 So now the countdown is really on: less than 2 weeks until my due date!  Hard to believe :)

X marks the Dining Table? A new WIP

Here's what's on my design wall today:

Our dining room recently got a new coat of paint, and this will be a new table runner for the table...  our dining chairs have an "x" pattern on the back, so I liked the idea of repeating the theme :)

Friday Night Sew-in... sort of

Yesterday was my Friday off, and I had high hopes of spending quality time in my sewing room.  BUT..... I spent practically all day on my feet doing projects around the house.  Finally my feet (which btw look like Stay Puft Marshmallow Man these days) couldn't take any more, and all I managed to accomplish sewing-wise was to pull a bunch of fabrics from my stash:

Oh well, such is life.  I'm planning to use these in a wall-hanging quilt for the baby's room.  Less than 7 weeks now until the due date - think I can finish it in time??  :)

Stack-o-WIPs

In cleaning up my sewing room, I found these 7 quilt tops waiting to be finished.  I really don't like half-finished projects laying around taking up space, so I got busy over the weekend and finished 2 of the baby-sized quilts.  As for the bigger ones, you might recognize my Kaleidoscope, Scrappy Strings, Soul Blossom, and my oldest WIP an Hourglass throw quilt which I haven't touched in almost 2 years (ahem, and I used to kid my mother about taking 12 years to finish up a queen-size hand-quilted quilt...)

But.... getting up the motivation to baste a larger quilt (let alone actually quilt it!) takes way more energy than starting a smaller project, so what did I do?  You got it, I started another baby quilt with some leftover Bliss scraps from my Wonky 9 Patch.
I've been wanting to do another double hourglass since I made this Christmas stocking last year.  But this time instead of 3" blocks, these babies are 12" - this top should come together in no time (hopefully!)

Hey Soul Sister

Not much to say right now, but here's the latest WIP on the design wall.  Gotta love those Amy Butler prints!  The colors in this one are quite the change from my last quilt.

Zig-zag through Hometown

Friday was another Friday Night Sew-in hosted by Handmade by Heidi.  I had plans Friday night, so I sewed during the day (thank goodness for 9/80 schedule and my precious Fridays off!).  What were my plans you ask?  We went to the Eric Church / Justin Moore / Kip Moore concert.  Kip is actually my country boyfriend by the way... although I doubt he knows it :)  Anyways, I digress...

Lately I've been cleaning up my sewing room, and I had some leftover Hometown fabric from this kaleidoscope quilt.  So I got busy making 120 HSTs...
and then started playing on the design board - I'm thinking perhaps a zig zag quilt?   We'll see...

A great summer...

OK, so the title is misleading since I'm not mentioning what I did over the summer in this post.  But... lots of fun stuff happening in the last couple months and I have been largely "unplugged" which I highly recommend.  And here's some proof I've been sewing a bit too :)  More updates soon!

Blissful Wonkiness

I am so not a wonky girl.  I'm an engineer who likes order.  But actually these wonky 9-patch blocks were easy to put together and a nice step out of my comfort zone :)  I followed a great tutorial from Oh, Fransson!

W.I.P. Wednesday {6.27.12}

I have about 7 quilts that are in the queue to be quilted, and this one is the most recent.  Hmmmm, any guesses as to which part of quilt-making is my least favorite??  The hourglass design is addictive, I think I want to make a double-hourglass quilt next.  If I were a betting woman (which I've been known to be), I'd bet that I start working on the next quilt top before quilting any of the 7...

W.I.P Wednesday {5.16.12}

Here's what's currently on the design wall - lots of citrus-y hourglass goodness.  The fabrics are also from vintage sheets - my first "vintage" quilt was finished last week...

W.I.P. Wednesday {4.25.12}

It's been a super-busy week so far at work (read: long hours), so just a quick iphone picture of my scrappy strings quilt top.  Hopefully I'll get some more sewing time soon!  I want to do a scrappy binding for this one :)

W.I.P. Wednesday {4.18.12}

Even though I have about 6 unfinished quilt tops to work on, this Sunkissed charm pack was begging to be used.  Must be the happy spring colors.  Soon to be 7 quilt tops awaiting my attention :)

W.I.P. Wednesday {3.21.12}

I bought a little bundle of Joel Dewberry's Heirloom fabric about 4 months ago and kept waffling back and forth on how to use it. Finally I settled on a minky rag quilt (I needed a simple no-brainer project!) I used a butter yellow minky on the back - I like the contrast with the bolder colors on the front. Time to get snippin'

Luckily I have some leftover scraps of this fabric - perhaps just enough for a new pillow cover??

Friday Night Sew-In: The Results {3.16.12}

I was back in London this week for work, but arrived home Friday evening. Traveling, especially business trips where I spend a lot of time interacting with my co-workers, makes me yearn for quiet "me-time" in the sewing room, so this month's FNSI fell at a perfect time. Plus keeping busy with a project helped me stay up later to help fend off the jet lag.

So I settled in with a new project and caught up on my shows (Bachelor finale anyone??) and put together this simple brick-pattern baby quilt using Amy Butler fabrics. It's basted and ready for quilting!

Friday Night Sew-In: The Results {2.17.12}

Well... there wasn't time for sewing on Friday between work and play :)
So I woke up this morning and worked on a few new rag quilts. The rainy weather is great for sewing! I snipped the seams on this one:And pieced the squares together on this one:

W.I.P. Wednesday {2.8.12}

Not a lot of sewing this week... just a few more blocks for the scrappy string quilt, and I cut out some lavendar & green fabric for a custom baby blanket.But don't for a second think I've been lazy! Remember all those boxes on our front porch last week?? Well, I spent almost the entire weekend in the master closet working on that project. I'd say it's about 70% complete, so for now, just a few teasers pics (tools & design plans).

W.I.P. Wednesday {2.1.12}

I was seriously hankering for some sewing time when I got home from my business trip. But did I work on any of my in-progress quilts? The kaleidoscope quilt perhaps? Or the vintage sheet quilt? Or wait, what about that hourglass quilt I started a year ago? Heck no! I started something completely new. But I am justifying it because I'm cleaning out the ol' scrap bin in the process. I was inspired by a recent scrap attack tutorial from Sew Lux Fabrics.

However, the biggest WIP in our house is NOT in the sewing room. This project is 3 years in the making, and here's a sneak peek:
(and these weren't even all the boxes!!)
